Style Pieces That Elevate A Simple Wardrobe

If I'm being honest, I am probably one of the least fancy people out there. I try my best to find simplicities in life and stick with them, opting to splurge every now and then if I deem something valuable to my lifestyle. With this territory comes repetitive outfits and monotonous colour palettes; something that's much more evident during the winter months when all I want to do is drown myself in oversized sweaters. Because I'm not the kind of person to always be keeping up with trends and sticking with more staple items, I thought I'd write up a post of the pieces I think help elevate a simple wardrobe.

WATCHES

Watches are a great way to add a bit of sophistication to an otherwise casual look. Over the past few years watches have become a staple in my wardrobe and my collection has seemed to grow without me noticing. I currently have four watches that I switch between - two with leather bands and two metal links. I'll reach for the leather ones when I'm dressing down and for the metal ones when I'm wearing a dress or on a night out. Without much effort they make it look like you've spent a bit more on your look overall.

GLASSES/ SUNGLASSES

As someone who has owned the same pair of sunglasses for the past 8 years, I can't really say I'm an expert on brands and styles. However, I can attest to the fact that a good, classic pair of shades can always elevate a look even if it's just with a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. This mindset is also applicable to eye glasses as they themselves are a sort of accessory. I've changed eyeglasses many times throughout the years and have learned that different shapes and styles evoke different moods and aesthetics. I currently have two pairs I switch between and love the ability to change things up.

CRISP SHOES

I have always had an issue finding comfortable shoes, so I know how important it is when you find a comfy pair that also looks good. In my opinion, the shoes are the final touch to an outfit and really bring together what the overall aesthetic is. Going for a more laid back look? Throw on a pair of sneakers. Trying to be a bit dressier? Maybe opt for sleek flats or even heels. Pointed boots are my favourite shoe for when I want to dress up an outfit, but lately I've been loving my new burgundy leather loafers. The key is to keep them looking fairly decent despite how long you have them. This is something I've had to learn the hard way as I'm so rough with my shoes and usually have to toss them out after a year.

HANDBAGS

I used to be a handbag fiend, but throughout the past few years have really tamed myself. I was addicted to buying handbags, really appreciating the construction of many designer ones and the practicality of others. Because of this short-lived obsession I have a fair amount of handbags that I still love to look at, but don't always use. They are now saved for when I feel like my outfit needs a little extra oomph. One of my favourites is a bright red Ralph Lauren structured bag that looks beautiful paired with an all black outfit and trench coat - a look I'll be falling back on a lot this autumn when I'm in a rush. Having a nice bag to throw on top of a simple outfit makes it look like you've put in a lot more effort, even if your hair and makeup don't necessarily agree.
